Rotary Geotechnical Site Investigation
When cracks began to appear in Tarmac above a Sea Wall, a Geotechnical Engineer was appointed to undertake an investigation and design a solution.
We were approached by the engineer and asked to drill boreholes at the site to provide both core samples and in the hole testing along with a number of boreholes drilled to probe for voids or collapse.
The variety of drilling methods along with the different tests and sample recovery required was undertaken by one of our small tracked Geotechnical drilling rigs. The rig is able to undertake full geotechnical testing and rotary coring, can mobilise quickly and without the need for expensive haulage due to its light weight. The small footprint also allows it to get onto sites with restricted access and install boreholes in confined spaces. We have used the rig to drill inside a lift shaft within an office building in the past. Six boreholes were drilled to various depths and instrumentation and monitoring wells were installed to provide ongoing monitoring.
