Geologic Borehole and Systems were contacted by a farm and land owner in Cornwall who like many in rural areas was responsible for 3 miles of mains water supply pipe over their and neighbours land. Already spending significant amounts of money every month for mains water, they were also being charged in excess of £300 per month owing to a couple of leaks on the pipe run. These leaks were being caused by vehicles such as tractors and foragers driving over the old and shallow pipe and rupturing it. These leaks are incredibly difficult to find and very costly. This is a common story for many homeowners who also have long runs of water pipe that they are responsible for.
The owners felt that such a large annual water bill (£6000 plus) for in their opinion poor quality water was not acceptable and they started looking at other options. They were very keen to explore the possibility of a borehole as it offered obvious cost savings and provided the opportunity of becoming more self sufficient. After a site visit a detailed proposal document was submitted to the customer which outlined every stage of the process and detailed the costs in a transparent and easy to understand manner.
We went through the entire process with the owners and once all questions were answered a 65M borehole was drilled and installed. The completed system pumps water from the borehole through a pressurised system and supplies two property’s, the farm buildings and water troughs over a 350 acre farm. The water is treated and sterilised before it enters the network of pipes that were already supplying the houses and farm. Manganese and Iron were present in the water and these are removed along with a UV steriliser that kills bacterial contamination. The flow rate of the system had to be accurately calculated to ensure the treatment plant was working effectively.
Geologic Boreholes dealt with every part of the water borehole Cornwall project from initial drilling, through submersible pump supply and installation, pipe work and electric cable installation, water treatment and system commissioning. The owners were particularly pleased to be able to pump directly from the borehole without the need to store water in large tanks.
The entire project took 6 weeks from start to finish, this allowed time for the borehole to settle, trench work to be excavated to connect to the existing water system, the analysis of the water sample and the building and installation of the water treatment system. The water borehole system in Cornwall will see a return on investment within 2 years.
We have also written more case studies on our clients, where we have drilled boreholes for a hotel, kennels and irrigation project.
